Microsoft Office 2010 installation stuck at 60%

Microsoft Office getting stuck during installation is not a very common issue, however, getting stuck at a particular stage without any error message or code, can be mind-boggling and to find a resolution for it can be frustrating. Frustrating because, it took me 2 hours to find a resolution for this and I got from a website, not a Microsoft blog, Support or Tech-net website, however, from a Blogging site after a lot of research.

Issue: Initiated Microsoft Office 2010 installation from the image shipped with the system manufacturer.
Installation progress stayed at 60% or 3/5 for about 20 minutes, then, cancelled this and re-initiated the installation, again it got stuck at the same stage.

Thinking that this Ms Office exe file may be corrupt, downloaded the Ms Office from www.office.com/productkeycard and the ran the file, this also got stuck at the same stage.
Checked the Microsoft Answers, TechNet websites however, didn’t find any solution and then we tried the Microsoft Office Uninstall Fixit, to remove unwanted files that maybe causing this issue. Fixit completed successfully however, the installation again got stuck at the same stage.
Finally, after doing a lot of Research on the net, finally got the Solution from one of the Blogging site.

Solution: Open Task Manager.

Close/end the spools.exe service from Processes.

On this system, however, found that Spoolsv.exe process was running and ended this process and initiated the installation again and this time, Office 2010 installation completed successfully.

Microsoft Office 2010 was working fine.

Tried and Tested Solution.

  1. You helped me a lot. Thank you for blogging this solution.

When I got the same problem, some guys suggested me to get another disc to do installation or do windows update and try again on my client's new HP machine (window 7 32bit). However, I can't believe that any dependency of window update and disc problem can make installation stuck without any error. I thought that the OS/machine had problem instead at that time. And you proved my thought.

    Thank you

  15. Stop anything with the name Spool in it in Processes. Spool is just your printer queue so it wont hurt anything. Restart your computer to bring it back when install is finished. Not sure if this is associated with Updates but I was reinstalling to try to fix an Update hang for Office updates and Microsoft FIXIT didn't help. Seems like there might be a correlation here.

My task was labeled 'Spooler SubSystem App' in Windows 8 (not yet upgraded to Windows 8.1). Ending it in the middle of Office install and it started moving the progress bar that was stuck at about 50%. It to take a few more minutes to see the bar actually move but it steadily started progressing again normally and finished quickly.

Thanks for taking the time to publish this fix!
